TRANSIT VISAS
Detailed information about transit visas is available from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website.
See: http://www.immi.gov.au/managing-australias-borders/border-security/transit-visa-req.htm
Who is this visa for?
Transit visas are for persons intending to pass through Australia for any period of up to 72 hours. Citizens of the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Khazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan must obtain a transit visa if they intend to pass through Australia by air or sea in transit to another country, even if they do not intend to leave the airport in Australia and regardless of length of stopover in Australia.
Nationals of these countries require a transit visa, even if they do not intend to leave the airport in Australia and regardless of length of stopover in Australia. Travellers should check with their travel agent to determine whether their flight stops in Australia, as an Australian destination may not always appear on their airline ticket in transit situations.
Extensions of stay will not be granted. Persons travelling to Australia for tourism or any other purpose unrelated to facilitating their onward travel must apply for another class of visa.
How to apply
Information about how to apply for this type of visa is available from this website.
See: APPLYING FOR VISAS
Please note that there is no Visa Application Charge payable for transit visas.

Crew members wishing to join or leave a commercial or merchant vessel must also provide:
• A seafarer’s identity document (eg seaman’s passport);

• the port and date they are expected to join the vessel; and
• if the agent is not the vessel's owner, a copy of the request for crew from the vessel's agent in Australia. The request should contain the details of the crewmembers applying for visas.
Processing times
The Embassy aims to decide all transit visa applications on the same day as the application is lodged. However, as processing times vary according to workload and available resources, applicants should apply at least 2 weeks in advance of travel.
