Health Requirements
All visa applicants must meet Australia’s health requirements.
Detailed information about Australia’s health requirements is available from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website.
See: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1163i.pdf
If you need to undergo a medical examination in order to meet these requirements, the visa office will contact you (see also Procedures and processing times below).
If you are asked to undergo a medical examination, you will need to undertake it with a Panel Doctor especially appointed by DIAC. All Panel Doctors have the necessary forms for Australian visa medical tests available at their clinics. A list of Panel Doctors in this region is available from this website.
See: Panel Doctors
Procedures and processing times for all medical and/or x-ray examinations:
If you are required to undertake a medical and/or x-ray examination, the Embassy will issue you with the required forms and information about where to go for your medical examination.
All panel doctors also have the medical forms if applicants wish to do their medical examinations prior to formal referral from this office. The panel doctor will charge you directly for the examination.
After you have completed the required health checking, the doctor will send the reports directly to this office. We then forward the reports to the Health Assessment Service (HAS) in Australia for consideration.
Please note, it may take between four to five weeks from the date of examination for the Embassy to receive a response from HAS. You will need to take these timeframes into consideration when planning your proposed travel to Australia. In some cases you or your family members may be requested to do additional medical tests which could extend processing time.
Medical examinations without Embassy referral
If you know that you will be required to undergo a medical examination in order to meet the health requirement, is open to you to undertake a medical examination with one of our Panel Doctors prior to being formally referred to the Panel Doctor by us, even prior to you lodging your visa application with us.
If you choose to do this, it may speed up the processing time of your application when it is lodged.
Please note the fees that a Panel Doctor may charge are not refundable even if the visa is not granted. If you choose to undergo a medical examination without being referred by us, you do so at your own risk.
Medical results have a limited validity. Normally, validity is twelve months from the date of clearance. However, depending on the health of the applicant, sometimes the validity may be shorter.
You will be required to pay for a medical examination for each family member included in your application regardless of whether or not they are migrating with you.
Who needs a medical?
Temporary Entry
You may be asked to undergo a medical and/or x-ray examination:
• If you are applying for a stay of greater than three months;
• If you are likely to enter a hospital or health care area (including nursing homes);
• If you are likely to enter a classroom situation for more than four weeks;
• If there are indications that you may not meet the health requirement.
All student visa applicants will require a medical examination.
If you are aged 70 or more, you must do a medical examination to determine that you are medically fit to make the two-way trip to Australia. Please take the attached pro forma to a panel doctor to complete.
See: Pro Forma
Permanent Entry
All applicants for permanent entry to Australia must do a medical examination. Each family member over 11 years of age will also need to have a chest x-ray. Non-migrating children under 18 years of age are also required to undergo a medical examination.
